Head of IT

Job description

Our Team

We advocate for travel's positive impact on the world, guided by a vibrant culture rooted in established company values. We empower our people to innovate and grow.

Our differences give us growth. Our diverse team originates from more than 50 countries, bringing together a depth of perspective and curiosity about the world. We encourage a culture of openness, curiosity, and flexibility—vital to deepening a shared understanding of our customers and each other.

We have a flexible hybrid model, working from our Utrecht HQ and our homes in the Netherlands.

As travel is about discovery, we're searching for the right people to join our team. Are you ready to inspire the world through travel?

We’re on the search for…

We’re on the search for an inspiring Head of IT ready to encourage innovation, empower teams, define and execute the IT sub-strategy and shape the future of IT at Eurail BV. If you want to leverage technology to create seamless travel experiences and thrive in a progressive, forward-thinking environment, this is your chance to create change.

At Eurail, we have a hybrid way of working: the office is where we come together to meet, brainstorm, and collaborate, while home is the place for focused, uninterrupted work. Most teams are in the office two days per week, and as Head of IT, you'll be expected to engage with your colleagues during those in-office moments.

What you’ll be doing

You will lead, mentor, and develop the IT team, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth. You’ll guide a team of 8 skilled colleagues: team leads (frontend, backend, app development, QA, and IT operations), business analysts and project managers. You’ll oversee the complete IT infrastructure, ensuring robust support for our B2C and B2B e-commerce environment, where product teams innovate and deliver new features. You'll enhance process initiatives alongside the Architect, Leads, and Privacy/Security Officer. As an important member of the Eurail management team, you’ll shape and carry out daily operations and strategic initiatives while reporting directly to the CIO.

Your primary responsibilities are:

  • Develop and implement the company’s IT sub-strategy, aligning with overall business goals.

  • Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of resilient IT systems and infrastructure, ensuring high availability, reliability, and scalability.

  • Manage the IT budget efficiently, ensuring cost-efficient solutions and optimal resource allocation.

  • Oversee strategic IT projects and epics, ensuring they are delivered with quality, future-proof and aligned with the IT sub-strategy.

  • Maintain positive vendor and supplier relationships and manage relationships with external and internal stakeholders, aligning IT initiatives with broader business objectives.

  • Recruit, train, manage resource capacity and coach IT staff, set clear expectations, and conduct performance appraisals to ensure individual and team achievement.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies to inspire innovation and enhance business results.

What we’re looking for

It's already a possible match when you share the same mindset as us, being forward-thinking, results-driven, caring and embracing diversity.

In terms of your experience and skills:

  • More than seven years of IT leadership, guiding IT operational and development teams and cross-functional groups.

  • Proficient strategic thinking, able to align IT initiatives with business goals and enhance digital transformation.

  • Deep knowledge of IT infrastructure, cloud platforms (e.g. AWS), systems architecture, and development environments.

  • Experience in managing e-commerce environments and supporting agile product teams in a stimulating setting.

  • Ability to accommodate changes in technology, business needs, and market trends

  • Great interpersonal and communication skills to engage efficiently with stakeholders at all levels.

  • Experience with project management, SAFe, and agile methodologies and frameworks.

In addition, it’s extra credit if you have…

  • Knowledge of data privacy and security regulations.

Our offer

  • Our hybrid work model offers flexibility in when and where you work. Whether you need collaboration, quiet time, or social interaction—online or in-person—it's all possible, but some office days per week are required.

  • A complimentary NS train card to travel across the Netherlands for work and leisure.

  • An annual free Interrail/Eurail travel pass for you and a companion, so you can explore Europe and share the same experiences as our customers.

  • Unlimited access to OpenUp for lifestyle & well-being recommendations.

  • Support for your well-being through a generous personal allowance.

  • The chance to develop your personal and professional growth plan using your training budget.

  • An annual team trip across Europe to experience our product directly.

  • An annual leave package of 28-30 days, plus study days, volunteer days, and Good Friday.

  • Salary Scale: 62, Monthly gross salary (excluding 8% allowance): €8500 – 10.500 (full-time) based on experience.

Curious to apply?

Apply directly via our website (https://jobs.eurail.com/en/vacancies).

  • We'll ask you to share your resume in English (our business language) and tell us why you're interested in Eurail and this particular role. It doesn't hurt to be creative; we enjoy seeing your personality shine through.

  • As part of the process, we may also ask you to complete a short assessment to showcase your skills.

If we think you might be a good candidate, the next step is a relatively informal interview with some of your potential new team members. For you, this is a chance to understand if Eurail is your ideal workplace, and for us, it tells us more about the value you would bring.
